St. Aug's Green Named D2Football.com National Co-Offensive Player of the Week
September 9, 2009
Quarterback Joaquin (pronounced Wa –KEEM) Green of Saint
Augustine’s College was selected D2Football.com National
Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday (Sept. 9).
Green (Redshirt Fr./Pittsboro, N.C.) earned national recognition
after throwing six touchdown passes in a 43-41 three overtime loss
to the University of Charleston (W.Va.) this past Saturday in only
his second collegiate start. He tied the Division II national
record for most touchdown passes by a freshman in one game, which
is shared by five other players.
Green, who was named CIAA football rookie of the week on Monday,
also set a Saint Augustine’s College school record in the
modern era. The previous record was held by former standout Darrell
Nesbitt, who threw five touchdown passes against Winston-Salem
State University in 2005.
“It is a great accomplishment and we are proud of him,”
Costa said about Green. “It lets people know that he has a
lot of talent and a lot of potential. When you can do what he did
in only his second game, that’s amazing. He is a very good
young man and a very smart young man. He carries a 3.8 [grade point
average], and all of that shows [on the field].”
Offensive coordinator Matthew Montgomery says Green has a keen
knowledge of the game, which helps him make good decisions.
“It feels good to have quarterback who understands football
and the passing game,” Montgomery said. “It makes
coaching a whole lot easier.”
Green, who completed 20 of 33 passes for 228 yards, six touchdowns
and one interception against Charleston, is the second consecutive
CIAA player to win a D2Football.com weekly honor. Last week,
Quintez Smith of Shaw University was named national defensive
player of the week.
D2Football.com is widely considered as the most comprehensive and
popular news source for Division II Football fans.
