MURFREESBORO - With the help of some local donors and Food Lion,
Head Football Coach Tim Place was able to make some Thanksgiving
wishes come true for families in the local Roanoke-Chowan
community. Place began his "Two for Turkey" drive in November and
collected enough money to help feed seven families full
Thanksgiving meals. Food Lion (the Murfreesboro store location)
pitched in to help the cause by assisting Place secure the food
necessary to make sure his drive was a success in the
community.
"We were able to garner enough money through donations to get a
full Thanksgiving meal for seven local families," said Place. "It
was a humbling experience and I hope that for at least one day, we
were able to make each of their lives a little easier."
Place personally delivered the meals along with his children,
Claire and Nate, to the families the day before Thanksgiving.
"Giving back to the community where we work and live is important
and because we helped at least one person, I would call this a
success for all those involved," continued Place.
Place started the "Two for Turkey" drive in November, hoping to
garner two dollars from donors. The efforts collected nearly
$400.00 which were then used to purchase the meals for the local
families. "Food Lion pitched in to help make sure the families got
the complete meal," said Place.
Since coming to Chowan, Place and the football program have been
active in the community. Last year they worked on several community
service projects including raising money for Breast Cancer
Awareness Month and Project In as Much. This year the team is
working along with Riverview Elementary School to help promote
literacy in young readers.
