SHAW POSTS HUGE WIN OVER MEAC'S BETHUNE-COOKMAN
DAYTONA BEACH , FL-Raymond Williams and Jason Royal each scored touchdowns and the defense forced seven turnovers as the Shaw University Bears downed the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats of the MEAC 20-6 yesterday in Daytona Beach.
Following a storm that delayed the kickoff for thirty minutes, Shaw jumped on the Wildcats early in the first quarter when James Duplessis recovered a fumble by BCU's JeVaughn Reams at the Bears' 40-yard line. One play later, quarterback Travis Robinson connected with Jason Royal on a 60-yard touchdown pass as the Bears opened up a 7-0 lead on their MEAC opponents.
Shaw's defense would come up with another big turnover late in the first quarter when B-CU quarterback Brian Sumlar coughed the ball up inside the Bears' 10-yard line which was recovered by Herbert Tanner. Shaw capped a 12-play, 61-yard drive with a 46-yard field goal by Lyncon Shepherd to capitalize on the Wildcats' miscue and push the lead to10-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Shaw extended their lead on their first possession of the second quarter when Raymond Williams scampered in from 16 yards out to complete a six-play, 70 yard drive; a 17-0 lead that held up at the half.
The Bears got what would be their final points of the afternoon when Caleb Reid nailed a 23-yard field goal with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter to open up a 20-0 lead.
Bethune-Cookman finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Sumlar scored on a 12-yard run. The PAT attempt failed and the Wildcats trailed the Bears 20-6 with just over thirteen minutes remaining in the game.
The Bears would ride their defense the rest of the way as they recovered two fumbles and stopped B-CU on a fourth down attempt to pick up the win over the Division I FCS Wildcats and improve their record to 2-0.
Notes of Interest: Bowie State's James Proctor tied a Bulldogs record for the longest Kickoff Return (Victor Jackson vs. Hampton in 1979), returning the games opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown versus Shepherd University.
Notes of Interest: The 43-41 loss in three overtimes against Charleston (WV) was the first overtime game for the Falcons since reinstating football in 2002.
