CIAA Football Week Six Recap: Trojans Styme Vikings

TROJANS STYMIE VIKINGS

PETERSBURG, VA- Leonard Johnson passed for 235 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Virginia State Trojans to a 23-10 win over the visiting Elizabeth City State Vikings last night at Rodgers Stadium.

Johnson threw touchdown passes of 17 and 35 yards as the Trojans (4-2, 2-1 CIAA), raced to a 13-0 first quarter lead over the Vikings (4-2, 2-1 CIAA). Rahoo Walker's 3-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds remaining in the second quarter extended the Trojans' lead to 20-0 at halftime over the punchless Vikings.

The Vikings, who came into the game averaging a conference leading 38 points a game, didn't get on the scoreboard until the 6:54 mark of the third quarter when Daniel Mendez kicked a 25-yard field goal to make the score 20-3. Howard Williamson's 1-yard touchdown run with eight seconds left in the third would cut the lead to 20-10, but the normally offensively potent Vikings would be held scoreless the rest of way by a stingy Trojan defense.

ECSU, who came into the contest averaging 377 yards a game, was held to a season-low 135 yards and nine first downs, while Virginia State rolled up 356 yards of offense and had 19 first downs.
