BULLDOGS, PANTHERS BOTH WIN TO SET UP EASTERN DIVISION SHOWDOWN
BOWIE, MD- In a game that had as many turnovers as points, Bowie State's defense limited Saint Paul's to a season-low 28 yards of total offense and converted two of those turnovers into touchdowns as the Bulldogs posted a 14-0 shutout of the Tigers yesterday in Bowie.
Playing on a rain-soaked field that had become a muddy quagmire by game time, the two teams combined for 14 turnovers and only 167 yards of total offense. With offense at a premium in the soggy conditions, The Bulldogs got their only points of the day on defensive back Kenneth Turner's (3 INT's) 37-yard interception return and wide receiver Larry Dixon's fumble recovery in the end zone. Bowie State then relied on its league-leading defense to shut down the Tigers, holding them to 16 rushing yards and 12 yards passing for the game.
With the win, Bowie State improves its record to 5-2 overall and remains undefeated in CIAA play at 5-0. It also sets up next week's game at Virginia Union (5-3, 4-1 CIAA), as a pivotal matchup for control of the Eastern Division.
PETERSBURG, VA-In other conference action this week, running backs Trevon Winston and Chris Smith combined for 325 of Virginia Union's school record 490 rushing yards as the Panthers rolled to a 31-3 road win over the Virginia State Trojans in a nationally televised contest Thursday night in Petersburg.
The Panthers dominated on both sides of the football, getting rushing touchdowns from four different players, rolling up 511 yards of total offense, while limiting the Trojans to only 118 yards of offense as they improved to 5-3, 4-1 CIAA. The victory keeps VUU within a game of division leading Bowie State heading into next Saturday's Homecoming showdown with the Bulldogs at Hovey Field in Richmond.
NOTES OF INTEREST
Notes of Interest: Justin Hamilton became ECSU's all time leader in interceptions, interception return yardage against Lincoln on Saturday. He already hold the school records for passes defended, blocked kicks and forced fumbles.

The Falcons have limited opponents to minus net rushing yards in two consecutive games. Livingstone was held to minus 22 rushing yards against the Falcons on Saturday. The Falcons rushed for over 200 yards in their second straight game. Marcus Crump had his second straight game of multiple sacks.
