CIAA Football Players of the Week- Week Nine

Offensive Lineman of the Week: Larry McDonald, Fayetteville State
Position:  OG   Height:  6-2  Weight:  331  Class:  SO  Hometown:  Mebane, NC 
Comments:  McDonald was a key clog on a Fayetteville State offensive line that gained 258 yards rushing against the CIAA's fifth-best rushing defense. 

Receiver of the Week:
 Kevin Hodrick, Chowan
Position:  WR Height:  6-2  Weight:  200  Class:  So  Hometown:  Carson, CA 
Comments:  Kevin Hodrick had a season-high 123 yards receiving, in a 33-22 Homecoming win over Johnson C. Smith University. He caught 8 passes, including an acrobatic 6-yard touchdown pass on a one-on-one in the corner of the end-zone. He had a long reception of 43 yards. 

Offensive Back of the Week:
Richard Medlin, Fayetteville State
Position:  Running Back  Height:  6-1  Weight:  2-2  Class:  JR  Hometown:  Raleigh, N.C. 
Comments:  Medlin gained 87 yards on only eight carries; gaining 10.9 yards per carry. Medlin scored two touchdowns, including one for 59 yards. 

Defensive Lineman of the Week:
Darius Powell, Fayetteville State
Position:  DE  Height:  6-3  Weight:  225  Class:  JR  Hometown:  Waldorf, MD 
Comments:  Powell filled the stat sheet, logging seven tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles and a 12-yard fumble return for a touchdown -all season highs. Powell helped the FSU defense limit St. Augustine's to -72 yards rushing and 35 total yards of offense. "He probably had his best football game of his young career here at Fayetteville State," FSU head coach Phillips said. "He's an unbelievable talent and we need him to continue to play like he played today." 

Linebacker of the Week:  
Enrique Cox, Virginia Union
Position: LB Height: 5'11 Weight: 185 Class: Sr. Hometown: Chesapeake, VA
Comments: Cox returned a fumble for 54 yards for a touchdown with two minutes left in the game. Virginia Union defeated Bowie State, 17-16.

Defensive Back of the Week:
Gregory Summerville, Fayetteville State
Position:  CB  Height:  5-11  Weight:  196  Class:  SR  Hometown:  Clayton, N.C. 
Comments:  Summerville had two interceptions, including a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown against St. Augustine's College. Summerville helped the Broncos' secondary limit SAC to 107 yards passing. 

Rookie of the Week:
 Marvin Payne, Jr., Johnson C. Smith
Position:  QB  Height:  5-11  Weight:  180  Class:  Fr  Hometown:  West Palm Beach, FL 
Comments:  Payne stepped in and threw three touchdowns against Chowan University. Payne was 13-24 for 186 yards; logging his longest playing time of the season. 

Specialty Player of the Week:
Stephen Velasquez, Virginia Union
Position: Kicker Height: 5'11 Weight: 185
Comments: Velasquez converted an extra point attempt to push the Panthers past Bowie State, 17-16.

Coach of the Week:
Kenny Phillips, Fayetteville State 

Comments:  Phillips guided Fayetteville State to a 56-6 homecoming win over St. Augustine's; which was the largest win of the 16 meetings between the two schools. The Broncos' win gave FSU its eighth winning season in 10 years under Phillips and its fourth appearance in the CIAA Championship game since 2002.
