Three football players from Saint
Augustine’s College – Walter Sanders, Steven Stanback
and Jone’ Harris – were chosen Thursday to play in the
2010 Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl which will be held Dec. 18 in
Atlanta, Ga., in the Georgia Dome.
The second annual all-star contest features players from
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The game was
created to give players a chance to play against the best HBCU
talent in the country in front of NFL, CFL and UFL professional
teams.
Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.) is a tailback who leads the CIAA and
ranks third nationally in Division II in rushing. He has rushed for
969 yards and 11 touchdowns on 176 carries for a 138.4 yard average
per game. Already the school’s career rushing leader, Sanders
needs only 31 yards to become the school’s first 1,000-yard
rusher in a season in the modern era.
Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills, Md.) is a linebacker who is among the
CIAA leaders in tackles. He ranks tied for second in the league and
leads the Falcons in total tackles (64) while tied for third in the
CIAA with three interceptions. A preseason All-CIAA selection,
Stanback has been named the CIAA’s top linebacker the past
two weeks.
Harris (Sr./Fairfield, Calif.) is considered among the best tight
ends in the CIAA. He is currently second on the team in receptions
(12) and tied for second in touchdown catches (3). Harris was named
CIAA receiver of the week after making five catches for 87 yards
and a touchdown in a 20-17 season-opening win over Catawba.
