CIAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RETURNS TO DURHAM AND NEWLY RENOVATED DURHAM COUNTY STADIUM ON NOVEMBER 13
October 26, 2010
Hampton, VA – The 2010 CIAA Football Championship Game will
be played in Durham on Saturday, November 13. This will mark the
third consecutive year the event has been played at Durham County
Stadium. The Championship Game kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
“We look forward to our premier football event returning to
Durham. Without question, the 2010 season is one of the most
exciting in CIAA history,” Commissioner Leon Kerry said.
“We still have seven teams with a realistic chance of winning
their division and a place in the Championship Game.”
The conference boasts several All-America candidates including
RB Walter Sanders of St. Augustine’s (1171 yards rushing,
14TDs),QB Kameron Smith of Winston-Salem State ( 1458 yards
passing, 20 TDs), and Preseason All-America candidate DL Malcolm
Jenkins of Elizabeth City State (7.5 sacks, 12.5 tackles for
loss).
Last season, Fayetteville State defeated Bowie State, 21-10, in a
last minute come from behind victory. Fayetteville State was
subsequently invited to participate in the NCAA Division II
Playoffs and fell in the first round.
This season, Shaw, St. Augustine’s and Winston-Salem State
will be battling until the final regular season weekend (November
6) for the Southern Division Title. The three will play two
critical contests over the final two weekends with Winston-Salem
State at Shaw on October 30, and Shaw at St. Augustine’s on
November 6. Virginia State controls its destiny in the Northern
Division with Bowie State, Elizabeth City State and Chowan still in
the hunt. The Trojans travel to rival Virginia Union on
Saturday.
“The City of Durham is thrilled to again host the CIAA
Football Championship,” said City of Durham Mayor William V.
“Bill” Bell. “We are honored that the CIAA has
chosen Durham as the host for its Championship Game and we look
forward to welcoming the schools, the players, and the fans to our
wonderful community.”
Since the Divisional Format was put in place in 2000, CIAA regular
season attendance has continued to grow. Simultaneously, the
Championship Game (revived in 2000) has grown into one of
football’s most anticipated events.
Exciting events are planned including the Food Lion-CIAA Tailgater
of the Year contest where the winner (anyone can enter who comes to
the game) will be recognized on the field at halftime. Also, the
best college organization that tailgates at the game will be
recognized at halftime as well by Food Lion. Fans may also visit
Nationwide Insurance’s booth outside of the stadium on game
day to register to win tickets to the 2011 CIAA Basketball
Tournament.
“We have an exciting game planned with plenty to do for the
entire family,” said Championship Game Director Jeffrey
McLeod. “All football fans should come to the CIAA Football
Championship and enjoy one of the most exciting games of the
season, the halftime battle of the bands and all of the great
events we have planned.”
Tickets are on sale now for $20 for
non-students and $10 for students. Fans can call 757-865-0071 or
