JENKINS NAMED FINALIST FOR GENE UPSHAW DIVISION II LINEMAN OF THE YEAR
 
ECSU Senior One of Eight Nominees on National Ballot

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA- Elizabeth City State University senior defensive lineman Malcolm Jenkins has earned a spot on the national ballot for the 8th annual Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award sponsored by the Manheim (Pa.) Touchdown Club.
 
Jenkins, a native of Florence, NJ, and Brandon Fusco of Slipper Rock University received the most votes among the votes among the 10 candidates in the Super Region One portion of the competition and will join the top two candidates from three other NCAA Division II super regions on the national ballot.
 
Jenkins, the 2010 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, led the CIAA in both sacks (12 solo, 2 assisted) and tackles for loss with 23 tackles for a loss of 75 yards (1.85ypg). His sack total ranks second in NCAA Division II while he places 9th overall in the nation in tackles for loss. He is ECSU’s all time leader with 28 career sacks.
 
The 2010 Upshaw Award winner will be announced in December and will receive his award at the banquet for the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game (Feb. 5, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas).
 
This year’s Upshaw Award winner is assured of a spot on one of the rosters for the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game, as well as the East/West Shrine Game (Jan. 22, 2011, in Orlando, Fla.).
 
Fusco received 17 of the 39 first-place votes cast in the regional competition and also received seven second-place votes, while Jenkins received nine first-place votes and 11 second-place votes.
 
Fusco accumulated 137 points in the voting and Jenkins scored 114 points.
 
Sports information directors at Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Northeast-10 Conference, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football-playing institutions served as voters in the Super Region One competition.
