St. Aug's Sanders Named to Daktronics Super Region 1 First-Team
Senior Running Back is Eligible for Football All-American Selection
RALEIGH, N.C. – December 2, 2010 - Saint Augustine’s
College football player Walter Sanders (Baltimore, Md.) has been
named to the Daktronics Super Region 1 Football Team. Sanders
earned a spot on the first team as a running back after being named
CIAA Offensive Player of the Year. He ended the regular season
ranked first in the CIAA in rushing and fourth nationally in
Division II with 1,377 yards and a 137.7 yard average. Sanders is
also tied for first in the conference in scoring (90 points) and
touchdowns (15).
Sanders is the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher in the modern era. He rushed for more than 100 yards in a league-high eight games this season including a season-high 243 yards against Fayetteville State on Oct. 2 which is the second-highest rushing day in the CIAA this year. Sanders had two of the league’s three 200-yard rushing games this season. He is the school’s career rushing leader (3,747 yards) in the modern era.
Sanders led the Falcons to an 8-2 overall mark in the regular season and was was one of only two CIAA players selected to the all-region squad (Malcom Jenkins, Elizabeth City State University). The Falcons will compete in Pioneer Bowl 12 on Saturday, December 4 when they take on the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
