ECSU's Malcolm Jenkins makes First Team

Brookfield, Ill. The Don Hansen Football Committee has released the 2010 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region 1 squad today. (Jan.11).

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.  Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to the national ballot from which the 2010 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be selected later this month.

2010 and 2009 Harlan Hill Trophy runner-up Zach Amedro (West Liberty) and 2010 Gene Upshaw Award winner Brandon Fusco (Shippensburg) headline a talented All-Super Region 1 Team.

Amedro, a senior, completed 329 of 485 passes 67.8%) for 4,058 yards and 38 td’s. The top passer in Division II history, Amedro completed 1,079 of  1,697 passes for 14,733 yards and 137 td’s.

Fusco, a  6-5, 305-pound offensive center at Slippery rock, won the prestigious Gene Upshaw Award earlier this year, signifying the Division II “Lineman of the Year”.

Bloomsburg freshman running back Franklyn Quiteh (2,015 yards, 22 td’s) and Shepherd’s Tommy Addison (1,70 yards, 19 td’s) led the running backs, while talented West Liberty tight end Ryan Travis (126 catches, 1,402 yards, 15 td’s), and receivers Thomas Mayo of Concord (74 grabs, 1315 yards, 14 td’s) and Trevor Kennedy of Mercyhurst (75 catches, 924 yards, 11 td’s) were top vote getters.

Clarion’s Alfonso Hoggard (1,740 all-purpose yards, 1,045 rushing yards) was a repeat first team choice at All-Purpose back.

Leading the defensive team were Fred Hale (Mercyhurst) and Mike Price (W.V.Wesleyan) on the d-line and Malcolm Jenkins (Elizabeth City) and Xavier Brown (C.W.Post) at defensive end. Matt Freed (E. Stroudsburg) and Bryan Boyce (Mercyhurst) were the top linebackers, while Shepherd’s Keon Robinson was the top corner and Clarion’s Nick Sipes the top safety.

Mercyhurst placed five players on first team, with West Liberty getting four, shepherd three and Bloomsburg, Slippery rock, Fairmont state and Clarion getting two each.

Bloomsburg and California placed 9 of the overall team, Mercyhurst and had 8, Shepherd placed 7 and West Liberty a total of 6.on the team.

Super Region 1 (formerly Northeast Region) is compiled of universities from four conferences including the PSAC, WVIAC, NE10 and the CIAA. A total of 108 players representing 35 universities are represented on this team.
