Saint Augustine’s College’s Sanders To Play In Dixie Gridiron Classic

The next stop for Walter Sanders in his quest to play pro football is Utah.

Walter Sanders The star tailback from Saint Augustine’s College is scheduled to compete in the inaugural Dixie Gridiron Classic Feb. 5 at Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah, starting at 2 p.m. ET.

This will be the second college football all-star game for Sanders, who competed in the HBCU Classic in December. Sanders is one of four CIAA players headed west. The others are defensive lineman Terry Griffin of Elizabeth City State, wide receiver Derrick McPhearson of Bowie State and defensive back Terence Peete of Bowie State.

Sanders will be playing against some of the top talent in the country in front of pro scouts. Most of the players selected are Division I graduating seniors in the bowl and championship subdivisions.

“I am excited to play against players from big time schools in Division I,” Sanders said. “This is a great opportunity to further my career.”

This past season, Sanders led the CIAA with 1,377 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning him league offensive player of the year honors and a spot on the All-CIAA first team in leading the Falcons to a record 9-2 overall mark. The nation’s fourth-ranked Division II rusher, Sanders gained postseason regional and national recognition.

Sanders was named to the Daktronics All-Region first team, the Don Hansen All-Super Region I second team and the Boxtorow.com/HBCU All-America team in addition to being a Don Hansen All-American honorable mention pick. He was also a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy which is given to the Division II player of the year. Sanders is the Falcons first 1,000-yard rusher in the modern era.
