Star Tailback Also Selected Honorable Mention Division II
All-American
February 8, 2011
The postseason football accolades keep pouring in for senior
tailback Walter Sanders (Baltimore, Md.) of Saint Augustine’s
College.
Sanders will be honored Saturday by the 100% Wrong Club of Atlanta
as its CIAA offensive player of the year. The award will be
presented at the organization’s awards banquet at the
Renaissance Concourse Hotel in Atlanta, Ga.
Each year, the 100% Wrong Club honors athletes and coaches from the
four HBCU Conferences (CIAA, SIAC, MEAC and SWAC) as well as the
top athletes from the University of Georgia.
This is the second honor that Sanders has won recently. He was also
named Honorable Mention Division II All-American by the Don Hansen
National Weekly Football Gazette.
Sanders will miss the awards presentation in Atlanta, Ga., because
he will compete in the inaugural Dixie Gridiron Classic the same
day at Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah, starting at 2
p.m. ET. This will be the second college football all-star game for
Sanders, who competed in the HBCU Classic in December 2010.
This past season, Sanders led the CIAA with 1,377 yards and 15
touchdowns, earning him league offensive player of the year honors
and a spot on the All-CIAA first team. The nation’s
fourth-ranked Division II rusher, Sanders led the Falcons to a 9-2
overall mark with the nine wins setting a modern school record.
Sanders was named to the Daktronics All-Region first team, the Don
Hansen All-Super Region I second team and the Boxtorow.com/HBCU
All-America team. He was also a candidate for the Harlon Hill
Trophy which is given to the Division II player of the year.
Sanders is the Falcons first 1,000-yard rusher in the modern
era.
