CIAA Football Players of the Week- Week Five

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN- Ednick Belizaire, Shaw University
 
Position:  Center Height:  6-2  Weight:  286  Class:  Jr.  Hometown:  Miami, FL Comments:  Balizaire anchored an offensive line that allowed Shaw to tally 237 yards on the ground, primarily by running "up the gut." In addition to opening those holes, Balizaire recovered a Shaw fumble in the end zone, scoring a touchdown in Shaw's 31-28 victory over Elizabeth City State.
 
RECEIVER- Robert Holland, Chowan University
 
Position:  WR  Height:  6-1  Weight:  180  Class:  So  Hometown:  Newport News, VA Comments:  Chowan's Robert Holland led all receivers in a 20-13 loss to Virginia State Saturday night. Holland hauled in 11 passes for a season-high 152 yards. He caught a 13 yard touchdown late in the 4th quarter to help pull the Hawks within a score of the Trojans- but their comeback attempt fell short.
 
 
OFFENSIVE BACK- Clifton “Dominique” Budd, Bowie State University
 
Position:  QB  Height:  5-10  Weight:  185  Class:  Jr.  Hometown:  Silver Spring, MD Comments:  Over the past two weeks, Budd has gone from wide receiver to quarterback and has put up outstanding numbers. Budd set two BSU records against Virginia Union; torching the Panthers for a single game record 355 passing yards. He completed a single game high 32 passes (51 attempts) and three touchdowns.
 
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN- Jarvis Stokes, St. Paul’s College
 
Position:  DL Height:  6-3  Weight:  205  Class:  SR  Hometown:  Ft. Lauderdale Comments:  Stokes had a game high of 9.5 tackles, eight solo. He also had one sack against Livingstone in the Tigers’ victory, 27-6.
 
LINEBACKER- Fred Sparkman, Shaw University
 
Position:  ILB  Height:  6-2  Weight:  225  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Columbia, TN Comments:  Sparkman continues to lead the Shaw defense, this week with 13 tackles (nine solo and four assists) including two tackles for a loss of seven yards in Shaw's 31-28 victory over Elizabeth City State.
 
DEFENSIVE BACK- Darnell Evans, Shaw University
 
Position:  DB  Height:  5-8  Weight:  181  Class:  Fr  Hometown:  Madison, NJ Comments:  Evans, a freshman, pulled in two interceptions - and returned one for 54 yards and a touchdown. He returned the other 40 yards, leaving the Bears in outstanding field position. In addition, he had six tackles (three solo and three assists) in Shaw's victory over Elizabeth City State.
 
ROOKIE- Kameron Smith, Winston-Salem State University 

Position:  QB  Height:  6-0  Weight:  6-1  Class:  187  Hometown:  Garner, SC Comments:  Smith had another stellar game to lead the Rams to a 31-14 road win over the Fayetteville State Broncos. He completed 15-of-21 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-14 win in Fayetteville.
 
SPECIALTY- Justin Parker, Virginia State University
 
Position:  K  Height:  5-9  Weight:  170  Class:  SR  Hometown:  Petersburg, VA Comments:  Parker converted on two made field goals in a 20-13 win against Chowan. Parker is credited with a 19-yard FG in the 2nd qtr and a 30-yard FG in the 4th qtr. He also scored 2 point-after-attempts; providing eight of VSU's 20 points.
 
COACH- Cornell Maynor, Winston-Salem State University

Comments:  Maynor led the Rams to a 31-14 win over the Fayetteville State Broncos- the preseason favorites to win the CIAA championship. His Rams squad totaled 397 yards of total offense and four touchdowns while holding the Broncos to 217 yards of offense and just two touchdowns.
 
Other Notables…
*Bowie State's Clifton Budd's record breaking day, broke old single game records of Arthur Lee (1983). Lee's old records were 24 pass completions and 324 passing yards.
 
*Maynor spent the last 10 seasons as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Fayetteville State before leading the Winston-Salem State staff.
