CIAA Football Players of the Week- Week Seven

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN- Edawn Coughman, Shaw University
Position:  OL Height:  6-6  Weight:  300  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Atlanta, GA 
Comments:  Coughman anchored an offensive line that helped the Bears generate 491 yards of offense; 252 yards rushing, on the way to a 45-13 win over Johnson C. Smith.

RECEIVER- Matthew Coston, Lincoln University (PA)
Position:  WR Height:  6-1  Weight:  175  Class:  So.  Hometown:  Queens, N.Y. 
Comments:  Matthew Coston set school records for the Lions in yards (157) and receptions (9). He tied his own school record for receiving touchdowns (2), also logging his third 100-yard receiving day of 2010. He had the longest reception of his career, a 75-yarder.

OFFENSIVE BACK- Walter Sanders, St. Augustine’s College
Position:  TB Height:  5-11  Weight:  220  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Baltimore, MD 
Comments:  Sanders rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries in a 40-35 victory against WSSU, who had the No. 1 defense in the CIAA. It is the fifth consecutive 100-yard game for Sanders, the CIAA's leading rusher. He set the tone with a 34-yard run for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. When WSSU pulled within six, 37-29, late in the game, the Falcons handed the ball off to Sanders eight straight times for 40 yards which set up a game-clinching field goal for a 40-29 lead with 1:40 left. The Sanders-led drive ate up five minutes off the clock.  

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN- Timothy Green, Lincoln University (PA)  
Position:  DE Height:  6-1  Weight:  215  Class:  So.  Hometown:  Fanwood, N.J. 
Comments:  Timothy Green had six tackles including two sacks for a combined loss of 19 yards. He also had two pass break-ups and a blocked extra point. Chowan recorded just 85 rushing yards.  

LINEBACKER- Steven Stanback, St. Augustine’s College 
Position:  LB Height:  5-11  Weight:  220  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Temple Hills, MD 
Comments:  Stanback led the Falcons with 10 total tackles (9 solo, 1 assisted), two interceptions, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup in a 40-35 win over WSSU. He led the Falcons’ defense which forced six turnovers against the No. 1 offense in the CIAA. 

DEFENSIVE BACK- Zavis Padgett, Elizabeth City State University 
Position:  CB  Height:  5-11  Weight:  200  Class:  Sr  Hometown:  Charlotte, NC 
Comments:  Padgett was a big part of the Vikings’ hold of Virginia Union to only 57 yards passing as he finished the day with five tackles (3 solo, 2 assisted), a tackle for a loss of a yard and two interceptions. 

ROOKIE- Jermaine Jones, St. Augustine’s College  
Position:  WR Height:  6-3  Weight:  200  Class:  Fr.  Hometown:  Wilmington, NC 
Comments:  Jones caught two passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns in the 40-35 victory over WSSU. He pulled in a 68-yard scoring bomb in the first quarter to give the Falcons a 14-7 lead and scored on a 19-yard pass in the second quarter to push the Falcons' lead to 30-7. 

SPECIALTY- Alexander Tucker, St. Augustine’s College 
Position:  PK Height:  5-11  Weight:  170  Class:  Fr.  Hometown:  Union, SC 
Comments:  Tucker kicked a game-clinching 42-yard field goal with 1:40 left in the game to give the Falcons a 40-29 lead in a game they ultimately won 40-35. Tucker also booted a 46-yard field goal in the game to set a modern school record. 

COACH- Michael Costa, St. Augustine’s College
Comments:  Costa devised a masterful game-plan to stop unbeaten and nationally-ranked (17th) Winston-Salem State, 40-35. The Rams entered the game with the No. 1 offense and defense but the Falcons scored 30 or more points for the fourth straight game and forced six turnovers. The Falcons, picked seventh in the CIAA preseason, lead the Southern Division with a 4-0 record. 

Notes of Interest:  CIAA rushing leader Walter Sanders of Saint Augustine's College has rushed for over 100 yards in five straight games, a first for a Falcon player in the modern era. He is 178 yards away from becoming the first 1,000-yard Falcon rusher in the modern era.
