Chowan Chosen to Host NCAA/NFLPA Coaching Intern

August 15, 2011

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University football program has been chosen to host a coaching intern for the 2011 season. The intern program is a partnership with the NCAA and NFL Players Association (NFLPA), giving former NFL players an opportunity to begin their coaching careers. Chowan is one of just eight schools in the nation to be selected.

The coach assigned to Chowan is Fontel Mines. Mines was a standout wide receiver at Hermitage High School (VA) and the University of Virginia. At UVA, he started 20 games, hauling in 68 receptions for 737 yards and five touchdowns. Following his collegiate career, Mines was signed by the Chicago Bears as a tight end. He spent three seasons with the Bears before injuries cut his career short.

The Hawks begin the 2011 season on September 1st, when they host the Blue Bears of Livingstone College.
