RAMS RACK UP BIG POINTS IN A ROUT

RICHMOND, VA-So much for showdowns. A game that was anticipated to be a highly competitive matchup between one team with a stifling defense and one with an explosive offense, turned into a one-sided rout as the Winston-Salem State Rams (2-0) completely manhandled the Virginia Union Panthers 67-16 last night at Hovey Field.

The Panthers (2-1), who had shut out their previous two opponents, gave up their first three touchdowns of the 2011 season in the first half and trailed 20-3 at intermission.

Virginia Union seemed to have made the right halftime adjustments and forced WSSU to punt on their first possession of the second half. But the Rams exploded and outscored the Panthers 34-0 over the final eight minutes of the third quarter to turn this one into a blowout and crush any hopes Virginia Union had of rallying. The Rams led 54-3 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Winston-Salem State logged two touchdown passes from backup quarterback Jamie DeGeare and Virginia Union scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Quentis Clark to Raymond Mack and a 7-yard fumble recovery by Anthony Davis for the 67-16 final margin.

In a totally dominating offensive performance, Winston-Salem State outgained Virginia Union 493-195.  Quarterback Kameron Smith threw for 238 yards and four touchdowns to three different receivers; tailback Nic Cooper who nearly averaged a first down every time he touched the ball; rushing for 113 yards on 12 carries (9.4 yards per carry) and two touchdowns and receiver Dominique Fitzgerald hauled in five passes for 87 yards and two scores as the Rams rolled to their largest margin of victory since 1990.

The Rams showed they’re also dangerous on the defensive side of the ball, forcing five fumbles, including two that were returned for touchdowns; recording three sacks, and picking off a pass while holding the Panthers to less than 200 yards of total offense.

Next week, Winston-Salem State travels to Murfreesboro to take on Chowan, while the Panthers try to get back on the winning track when they travel to Lincoln (PA).
