CIAA Football Week in Review
For the week ending September 17, 2011, (Week 4)
RAMS CRUISE TO BIG WIN BEHIND SMITH’S SIX TOUCHDOWNS
MURFREESBORO, NC-Quarterback Kameron Smith continued his hot
start, passing for a career-high 355 yards and tossing six
touchdowns to six different receivers as the visiting
Winston-Salem State Rams (3-0,1-0 CIAA) cruised to a 55-24 win over
the Chowan Hawks (1-2, 0-1 CIAA).
The anticipated matchup between two high-scoring offenses never
materialized, but Winston-Salem State more than held up their end
of the deal. The Rams jumped out to a 34-10 halftime lead on the
Hawks behind Smith’s four first-half touchdown passes,
including a career-long 85-yarder to Jahuann Butler in the second
quarter.
Smith would throw two more touchdowns in the third quarter, before
backup Jamie Degeare came in for relief. Degeare also threw for two
scores as the Rams finished the game with a season-high 619 yards
of offense and with eight different receivers catching touchdowns.
Tailback Nic Cooper just missed his third straight 100-yard game,
finishing with 98 yards on 13 carries and a 29-yard touchdown
reception. Chowan receiver Robert Holland was stellar in the loss,
catching six passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Next
week, the Rams host Fayetteville State in their home opener, while
Chowan travels to Virginia State.
In other CIAA action this week…
Laquan Williams passed for 207 yards and a touchdown and Daron
Jones had a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown as the
Lincoln Lions snapped a 13-game CIAA losing streak with a 19-10 win
over the Virginia Union Panthers in West Grove, Pennsylvania.
In Charlotte, Defensive back Lance Harris’ 94-yard fumble
return for a touchdown with 57 seconds left in the game sealed the
deal as the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls shocked defending
Northern Division champ Virginia State 14-7.
