CIAA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE
WEEK
Week Eight
October 15, 2011
OFFENSIVE
LINEMAN
Sanerivi Reupena, Elizabeth City State
University
Position: OL
Height: 6-2 Weight:
350 Class: Sr
Hometown: Moreno Valley, CA
Comments: Reupena blocked for a line that
had 20 first downs and ran 82 plays from scrimmage for 432 yards
(296 rushing, and 161 passing) and four rushing touchdowns in the
Vikings' 28-7 Homecoming win over Virginia State.
RECEIVER
(Wideouts/Tight Ends)
Jamian Smith, Saint Augustine’s College
Position: WR
Height: 6-0 Weight:
185 Class: Sr.
Hometown: Kenansville, NC
Comments: Jamian Smith had 17 receptions for
142 yards and one touchdown against West Georgia to break the
modern school single-game mark for receptions, a record he set a
week ago with 16 catches against Winston-Salem State. His 18-yard
scoring catch on fourth down and 18 late in the game appeared to be
the game-clincher for the Falcons until West Georgia drove
downfield and kicked the winning field goal as time expired. In the
last two games, Smith has logged a combined total of 33
receptions.
QUARTERBACK
Quinshon Odom, Shaw University
Height: 6-3 Weight:
200 Class: So.
Hometown: Lakeland, FL
Comments: Odom had a career day despite a
slow start on the afternoon as he led the Bears past Fayetteville
State 35-29 in overtime. For the game, he was 24 for 42 for 376
yards including three passes for a touchdown. Of those yards, 249
came in the second half as the Bears battled back from a 29-7
deficit.
OFFENSIVE
BACK (Running
back/Halfback/Fullback/Tailback)
Daronte McNeill, Elizabeth City State University
Position: TB
Height: 6-1 Weight:
205 Class: Jr
Hometown: Elizabeth City, NC
Comments: McNeill put on a show for his
hometown/Homecoming crowd, rushing for three second half scores and
189 (199 Gained) yards on 36 carries, including a season best
69-yard run vs. Virgina State. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry and
went for 107 yards in the second half alone.
DEFENSIVE
LINEMAN
John Davis, Elizabeth City State University
Position: So Height:
DL Weight: 225
Class: 6-1 Hometown:
Sacramento, CA
Comments: Davis had his best game in a
Viking uniform against Virginia State with a team high seven
tackles (four solo, three assisted) including 2.5 sacks for a loss
of 12 yards and a forced fumble. The Vikings shut the Trojans out
for three quarters and surrendered only three yards of offense in
the second half. All of the Trojans’ second half possessions
went three and out.
LINEBACKER
Brandon McElwee, Lincoln (PA) University
Position: LB Height:
6-1 Weight: 200
Class: SR Hometown:
Gloucester City, N.J.
Comments: McElwee registered a team-high and
season-high 16.5 tackles, including 14 solo tackles. He had two
tackles for a loss of six yards in Lincoln's 22-10 loss at home to
Bowie State.
DEFENSIVE
BACK
Marcus Skeen, Shaw University
Position: DB
Height: 6-0 Weight:
188 Class: Sr.
Hometown: Thomasville, NC
Comments: Marcus Skeen helped the Shaw
defense shut down Fayetteville State's passing offense - holding
them to only 18 yards through the air. He led the Bears with ten
tackles, including six solo tackles and one tackle for a loss. Most
importantly, he got a hand on a Austin Turner field goal attempt
that would have won FSU the game; helping to block the kick and
give Shaw the overtime win.
ROOKIE
Terrence Malone, Virginia Union University
Position: RB Height:
5-10 Weight: 195
Class: FR Hometown:
Newport News, VA
Comments: Virginia Union University's
Terrence Malone rushed for 102 yards, but Johnson C. Smith
University topped VUU 26-19 in Charlotte, NC. Malone collected 102
yards and a touchdown on 11
carries.
SPECIALTY
Dominique Fitzgerald, Winston-Salem State
University
Position: WR/PR
Height: 5-11 Weight:
185 Class: Sr
Hometown: Danville, VA
Comments: Dominique Fitzgerald finished with
154 all-purpose yards in WSSU's 62-7 win over Livingstone College.
Fitzgerald had two catches for 22 yards and a touchdown and totaled
122 yards on four punt returns, including a 64 yard return for a
score.
COACH
Steven Aycock, Johnson C. Smith
University
Comments: The Golden Bulls made more modern
history with their 26-19 win over Virginia Union. Head coach Steven
Aycock has already picked up four wins in seven games this season.
JCSU has not produced a plus three-win season since 2006; they
finished 7-4 in the standings. That season also marked the last
time Johnson C. Smith had been 3-1 in the CIAA. Aycock earns his
first career victory against Virginia Union and their head coach
Michael Bailey in his third season (1-2). This is also the first
homecoming win for Aycock. Johnson C. Smith is 3-0 at home this
year.
Notes of Interest: WSSU clinched the CIAA
Southern Division crown and earned a spot in the CIAA Championship
game on November 12th.
Notes of Interest: Jamian Smith of St.
Augustine’s broke the school's modern single-game receptions
mark by one with 17 catches against West Georgia. It was a record
he set a week ago. Teddy Bacote had the second biggest day in
modern school history with 394 passing yards against West
Georgia.
