OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Name: Marion Holt Position: OL School: Virginia Union 

Height: 6’4 Weight: 322 Class: SR Hometown: Grandview, MO

Comments: Holt anchored a Virginia Union University offensive line that opened holes resulted in VUU rushing for 354 yards on the ground, the most for a VUU team since the Panthers set a school record of 490 rushing yards against Virginia State University in 2009.  Holt's offensive line also allowed NO sacks of a VUU quarterback in Virginia Union's 31-14 win over Brevard College.

 

RECEIVER (Wideouts/Tight Ends)

Name: Jameze Massey Position: WR School: Winston-Salem State 

Height: 5’8 Weight: 170 Class: SR Hometown: Monroe, NC

Comments: Massey had a monster game for WSSU, with six catches for 173 yards and one touchdown; including a 73 yard score in Winston-Salem State’s 30-22 win over Concord.

 

QUARTERBACK

Name: Kameron Smith Position: QB School: Winston-Salem State

Height: 5’11 Weight: 190 Class: SR Hometown: Garner, NC

Comments: Smith helped lead the Rams to a 30-22 win over Concord University and passed for 229 yards and two touchdowns, on 12 of 23 throwing with one interception.  In the win, Smith became WSSU’s All-Time leading passer (4,647 yards), surpassing Tory Woodbury (1997-00; 4,493 yards).

 

OFFENSIVE BACK (Running back/Halfback/Fullback/Tailback)

Name: Jerrell Washington Position: RB School: Virginia Union 

Height: 5’6 Weight: 176 Class: SR Hometown: Fort Pierce, FL

Comments: Washington became the first VUU player to score four rushing touchdowns in a single game since Andre Braxton scored four TDs against Fayetteville State University in 2000 as VUU downed Brevard College 31-14.  Washington also scored on an 81-yard run in the second quarter, marking the first VUU football player to record an 80+ yard run since Clarence Adams had an 85-yard run against Bowie State University in 1996.  Washington carried the ball 20 times for 179 yards, the most for a VUU offensive back since Washington had 151 yards against Chowan on Oct. 1, 2011.

 

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

Name: Rashad Vesprey Position: DL School: Virginia State

Height: 6’2 Weight: 295 Class: SR Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Comments: Vesprey recording 7 total tackles (5 solo, 2 assisted) and added 2 sacks against the West Liberty offense. Vesprey led a VSU defensive front that held West Liberty to 44 rushing yards (1.4 average per rush).

 

LINEBACKER

Name: Chaz Robinson Position: LB School: Saint Augustine’s

Height: 5’11 Weight: 220 Class: JR Hometown: Hampton, VA

Comments: Robinson had a game-high 10 total tackles in a 24-21 loss to No. 12 New Haven. Last week's league linebacker of the week, Robinson ranks first in the CIAA in tackles per game (12.0).

 

DEFENSIVE BACK

Name: Nigel Rios Position: DB School: Elizabeth City State

Height: 5’9 Weight: 170 Class: JR Hometown: Washington, D.C.

Comments: Rios turned in a career best in the Vikings' game versus Delta State. He posted a personal best and game high 13 tackles (9 solo, 4 assisted), including 2 tackles for a loss of 11 yards, a pass breakup, a blocked kick and a quarterback hurry.

ROOKIE

Name:  Drew Powell Position:  QB School: Livingstone
Height:  6’3 Weight:  235 Class:  FR Hometown:  Upper Marlboro, MD 
Comments:  Powell threw for a total of 305 yards (30-45). He threw one touchdown in the 49-17 loss to Catawba. Powell also finished the game with 65 rushing yards (team high), and scored one touchdown for the Blue Bears. 

 

SPECIALTY

Name: Stephen Velasquez Position: K School: Virginia Union 

Height: 6’2 Weight: 172 Class: SR Hometown: Haw River, SC

Comments: Velasquez hit a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter to provide the eventual winning points in VUU's 31-14 win over Brevard College on Saturday, September 8.  Velasquez was a perfect four-for-four in extra points on the day and also had three punts for 120 yards- an average of 40 yards per punt, including a 47-yard punt.

 

COACH

Name: Connell Maynor School: Winston-Salem State  

Comments: WSSU Coach Connell Maynor led his #8 ranked WSSU Rams to a 30-22 road win over Concord University. The Rams held the Mountain Lions, a 2011 playoff team, to -13 yards rushing on the day.
