FAYETTEVILLE STATE LAPPING THE FIELD AT PGA MINORITY
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Fayetteville State is about to
rewrite the record book at the PGA National Minority Collegiate
Golf Championship.
Seeking its seventh all-time title at the prestigious event, the
Broncos extended their first-round lead to a staggering 25 strokes
over Lincoln (Mo.) following a brilliant second round with an
aggregate team score of 293 at The PGA Golf Club on Saturday.
Fayetteville State, which placed 13th overall at the NCAA
Division-II Atlantic/East Super Regional on Wednesday, was led by
NCAA Championship-bound Jacob Barge (Jr., Fayetteville, N.C.), who
fired a 1-under 71 for a two-day total of 143. Jedidiah Fraizer
(So., Havelock, N.C.) backed up his 71 from Friday with a 73 for a
total of 144. CIAA Player of the Year Brandon Jobe (Fr.,
Fayetteville, N.C.) added a 74 while Lincoln Jackson (Sr., Southern
Pines, N.C.) carded a 75 and Mike Wallace (Se., Fayetteville, N.C.)
shot 89.
Fayetteville State has a rich history at the Minority
championship, winning it four straight times from 2006 to 2009. The
Broncos also captured the title in 1995 and 1996, and their six
championships are the most in the history of the event (St.
Augustine’s won five straight from 1990-94).
This year marks the 26th playing of the tournament, which
originated in November 1986 following the Jackson State University
Golf Tournament. It has elevated golf in minority colleges and
universities by providing opportunities to more players to compete
in a national championship.
