August 22, 2005

Hampton VA…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association celebrates Luqman Jaaber for being named the South Atlantic Region Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year as voted on by the Division II Commissioner’s Association. Jaaber joins 7 other regional winners as a finalist for the National Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, which will be decided later this month. The D-II Commissioner’s Association decides the regional and national scholar athletes of the year.

Luqman, a senior computer science major, captained the Panthers to the 2005 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship all while maintaining a 3.35 gpa. Jaaber is the national leader in free throw percentage (89.9), led the CIAA in steals with 103, was the team leader in assists with 152 and started all 34 games of his final season.

He was also named as the Virginia Union University Athlete of the Year as a senior.

This two-time, back to back, CIAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year scored his 1000th career point in 2004-2005 and led the nation in steals during his junior season.

The CIAA is no stranger to producing stellar student athletes that represent our conference on the regional and national level. North Carolina Central University’s cross country/track & field sensation Katerina Glosova was the CIAA’s most recent of the NCAA Division II Commissioners Association Women's South Atlantic Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2002.
