GOV. EASLEY WELCOMES ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TO STATE CAPITOL

RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley welcomed the Elizabeth City State
University Vikings men's basketball team to the State Capitol on
Tuesday to honor the team's Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Championship. On March 3, 2007 the team
defeated Virginia Union University 63-60 to capture the 2007 CIAA
Men's Basketball Championship.
"I congratulate you on your 3rd CIAA championship title," said
Easley. "This is an outstanding accomplishment for the team
and Elizabeth City State Univerity."
The team finished the regular season with a 12 - 15
record before rolling off four victories en route to the CIAA
championship . The Vikings fell to the Augusta
State University Jaguars 79-53 in the first round of the NCAA South
Atlantic Regional Men's Basketball Tournament.
Elizabeth City State University was founded as a minority teaching
college by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1891.
Today, the University is one of 16 public universities in the
University of North Carolina system offering undergraduate,
graduate and doctoral degree programs. U.S. News and World
Report ranked ECSU number one on their list of "Top Public
Comprehensive Colleges" in the south in 2004. Approximately
2,650 students attend Elizabeth City State University.
