66-45
February 8, 2010
(Raleigh, NC) – Nine Bears scored – three in double
digits – and ten collected rebounds as Shaw dominated
Livingstone 66-45.
Shaw (12-10, 9-6 CIAA) held the statistical advantage over
Livingstone (10-11, 7-8 CIAA) in just about every category. The
Bears outscored the Blue Bears over two-to-one in the paint, had
ten fast break points to Livingstone’s four, and outrebounded
Livingstone 43-25.
Shaw’s bench, spurred by six each from Michael Smith and
Britain Kelly, outscored the Blue Bear bench 20-3.
Both teams got off to an ugly start. Shaw committed three turnovers
in the first four minutes of the game, while Livingstone committed
two, and combined the teams went 0-6 from the field.
Aaron Caruthers started the game’s scoring with 16:22 showing
on the clock when he hit a jumper for Livingstone. Darryl Johnson
countered with a jumper a few seconds later to put Shaw on the
scoreboard.
Livingstone built a six-point lead at 8-2, and held off the Bears
for much of the first half.
The Bear offense did not come alive until more than 12 minutes had
elapsed in the first. Keith Darden hit a three for Livingstone,
giving them a 16-12 lead with 7:31 left in the half.
The Bears then found their rhythm and shooting stroke, scoring ten
unanswered points on three of four shooting from the field, and two
of three from the free throw line. Eric Pitts landed a three that
gave the Bears a 22-16 lead with 2:59 left on the clock. The Bears
went into the locker room at the half with a 28-20 lead.
Rodney Callwood and Darryll Johnson, scoring seven and six
respectively, went on a 13-2 run for the Bears to open the second
half. With 15:01 left in the game, Johnson’s jumper gave Shaw
a 41-22 lead.
Livingstone got no closer than 14 points the rest of the game, and
trailed by as many as 23.
Callwood led the Bears with 16 points. Raheem Smith had 15, while
Johnson had ten, and led Shaw with eight rebounds. Smith had four
assists for the Bears.
Greg Henry had 17 points for the Blue Bears while Jarred Stockton
led Livingstone with four rebounds.
The Bears return to action Thursday when they travel to
Fayetteville State for a 7:30 tip.
