All-CIAA Picks and Players of the Year

HAMPTON, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association has announced its honorees for the 2010 All-CIAA teams
and Players of the Year as selected by the men’s and
women’s basketball coaches associations.
The women’s team is headlined by Virginia Union
University’s Tonaye Smith (Sr./F/5-11/Detroit, MI), who has
been named the 2010 CIAA Player of the Year. Smith leads the CIAA
in scoring, averaging 18.9 points per game. She is also averaging
7.2 rebounds per game, respectively.
Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Deja Middleton of
Fayetteville State University. Middleton leads the conference in
blocked shots, averaging 2.0 per game and in defensive rebounds
averaging 6.5 per contest.
The men’s team is headlined by Bowie State
University’s Duke Crews (Sr./F/6-8/Hampton, VA), who has been
named the 2010 CIAA Player of the Year. Crews is the only player in
the CIAA averaging a double-double, recording 16.8 points and 10.3
rebounds per game. In addition, he ranks second in the conference
in blocked shots, averaging 2.5 per game.
Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Bowie State
University’s Travis Hyman. Hyman leads the conference in
blocked shots, averaging 4.0 rejections per game. He is ranked 4th
in the nation in blocked shots. He recorded the conference’s
single-game high, 13 rebounds in an outing against Elizabeth City
State.
The All-CIAA Teams and Players of the Year will be honored at the
2010 CIAA Basketball Tournament Tip-Off Luncheon on Tuesday,
February 23rd. A complete list of All-Conference performers is
