Player of the Week - Notes of Interest

In less than two seasons, Trevin Parks reached his 1,000th point scored at JCSU this week. First, he produced 27 points and six rebounds on the road against Virginia State. Next, Parks recorded 28 points in an 83-75 divisional victory over Fayetteville State at home. Parks is leading the CIAA in scoring and ranks 2nd overall in Division II. After this week's performance, Parks has 1,010 career points as a Golden Bull.

Newcomer of the Week - Notes of Interest:

Kenny Mitchell recorded his third double-double of the season against Johnson C. Smith on Tuesday.  Mitchell was a dominant force in the paint, scoring only seven points in the first half, but exploding for 19 points in the second half. Mitchell finished the game with 26 points and 10 rebounds on 9 of 19 shooting from the field and a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. Then, he reached double-figures again, scoring 23 points with nine rebounds; both game-highs against Elizabeth City State on Saturday.

Rookie of the Week - Notes of Interest:

In just two games this week, Bethel averaged 19 points per game and made nine three-pointers.  Against Virginia Union, he went 7-10 from beyond the arc, leading to 23 points. He also dished out seven assists this week and shot 83% from the free throw line. 

 

 

COACH OF THE WEEK

Ken Spencer, Saint Augustine's College
 
Spencer directed the Falcons to a 61-55 win over Winston-Salem State to hand the Rams their first CIAA loss of the season. The Rams had received votes in the NABC D-II Poll. This was the only game of the week for the Falcons.

Rookie of the Week - Notes of Interest:

Freshman Danielle Ferguson scored a career-high 23 points to lead Virginia Union to a 59-48 upset win over Virginia State University on January 26. The win marked the first time the Lady Panthers had defeated VSU in six years. 

 

COACH OF THE WEEK

Barvenia Wooten-Cherry, Virginia Union University 

Coach Wooten-Cherry guided VUU to wins over Virginia State and Chowan, and has the Lady Panthers in first place in the Northern Division of the CIAA. Those wins marked the first time a Lady Panther squad had defeated a VSU team in six years, and the first defeat over Chowan in five years.
