Kutztown Tops Bowie State Men’s Basketball 87-79 in Non-Conference Contest

Kutztown, PA – Bowie State University senior Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, MD) scored a personal season-best 18 points to lead four Bulldogs double figure scorers, but Kutztown University garnered the win by a score of 87-79 on Wednesday evening in the Keystone Arena. The loss, snaps a four-game win streak by the Bulldogs and sets the team record even at 5-5.

Reigning CIAA Player of the Week, senior Omari George (Baltimore, MD) tallied 19 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, a pair of blocks and three steals. Redshirt sophomore David Belle (Hyattsville, MD) contributed chipped in 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and sophomore Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, MD) finished the night with 11 points which included a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line.

Sophomore Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, MD) scored seven points and senior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, MD) and freshman Keith Duffin, Jr. were responsible for four points apiece. Senior Jemuel Brown (Laurel, MD) along with freshman Jacob Long (Washington, DC) rounded out Bowie State's scorers with two points each.

Kutztown (7-1) opened the game with a layup by Josh Townsend, but then the Bulldogs answered on the other end with a 3-pointer by Wells.

That 3-2 deficit at the 18:30 mark would be the only time KU's Golden Bears trailed for the remainder of the game. Kutztown rattled off the next seven points and took a double-digit lead (18-8) with 12:41 to go in the first half.

Kutztown used the speed of its guards to break the full-court press put on by the Bulldogs, and on the other end of the court, pressured Bowie State shooters to go 35.5 percent (11-for-31) from the field as the Golden Bears took a 49-34 lead into halftime.

The Golden Bears continued its hot play in the second half, holding a lead by as much as 20 (62-42), and were up 18 (70-52) with 10:43 remaining. But Bowie State chipped away at its deficit, and went on a 14-4 run over a span of 4:44 to find itself down just 81-77 with 1:46 to go.

Unfortunately for Bowie State, Kutztown's Anthony Lee connected on a layup and Ethan Ridgeway made 2-of-2 from the free-throw line to put KU back up by eight (85-77) with 28 seconds left in the non-conference contest.

Kutztown's Lee led all scorers with 21 on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, which included 3-of-5 beyond the arc and a knocked down all four of his free throws. Townsend recorded a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while teammate Rafiq Marshall added a dozen points. Ridgeway rounded out the Golden Bears' double figure scorers with 10 points and a game-high nine assists. 

The competition doesn't get any easier for the Bulldogs as Bowie State will host regionally ranked (#4) West Chester University on Monday (December 11) at 7 p.m.
