May 4, 2006

The No. 7-ranked Armstrong Atlantic men's tennis team picked up a 5-0 win over Shaw in the first round of the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Region in Savannah on Thursday afternoon, earning a berth in Friday's championship match.

The Pirates, who advanced to the NCAA DII semifinals last season, won all three doubles matches then got singles wins from senior David Secker and junior Taavo Roos. Roos defeated Olwaseyi Bamigbade at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Secker defeated Olayiwola Enitan, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. AASU improves to 17-6 on the season, while CIAA champion Shaw suffered its first loss of the campaign, finishing its season with a 17-1 mark.

After SU dropped all three double matches, it only took AASU two singles matches (#5 & #6) to claim the opening round win.  SU's CIAA Player of the Year, Kabiru Ibrahim had won the first set and was leading in the second 3-0 when the team match was stopped. At #1 singles, he was taking on AASU's Davor Zink who is ranked 4th in the country.  Ibrahim ended his collegiate career with an impressive three year 57-0 record.

AASU takes on the winner of Francis Marion and Anderson in the Mid-Atlantic Region Championship match at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5.
