J.C. Smith Men's Tennis Wins 5-4 at Shaw
Golden Bulls Squeak-Out First Victory Over Bears Since 2004

 

 

RALEIGH, NC - March 12, 2007 - For the first time since March of 2004, the Golden Bulls defeated the Shaw Bears in Raleigh by a 5-4 count.

Winning two of the three doubles with Aaron Hutcherson and Jason Stuckey beating Ben Cheikh and Emanuel Ameh 8-3, and Frento Burton and George Dixon beating Sherron Leigh and Martin Faison 8-0, the Golden Bulls got off to a good start.

Jumping out again with number five Russell McKoy won 6-0, 6-0 over Leigh and Frento Burton at number six 6-0, 6-0 over Martins, the Golden Bulls (1-0 Western Division, 4-0 CIAA, 9-6 overall) found themselves ahead 4-1.

But the Bears would battle back with Ibokun Ilesanmi beating Justin Stuckey 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), and Cheikh beating Hutcherson. Suddenly the score was 4-3.

Jason Stuckey beat Daniel Sabogal in the clincher 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. In the number four match-up Emanuel Ameh defeated Romar Douglas 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 for the final 5-4.

Smith moves to 9-6 overall and an unblemished 4-0 in conference play. The Bears drops to 2-5 overall. Next up for the Golden Bulls will be the Indians of Catawba College today, March 12, at 3:00 pm.
