Shaw Men’s Tennis Ranked Top in Region by NCAA
Ranked Second in Region by ITA; Women Ranked 10th by
NCAA
(Raleigh, NC) – The Shaw men’s tennis team has been
ranked number one in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA. The
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has ranked the Bears
second in the region. The women’s tennis team has been
ranked tenth in the region by the NCAA.
The top-ranked Bears are 11-0 on the season and 7-0 in the
CIAA. The ITA ranked Shaw second behind Charleston
(WV). Charleston was ranked second in the NCAA poll.
Fellow CIAA member Winston-Salem State is ranked eighth in the NCAA
poll.
Individually, the ITA has ranked Shaw’s number one player,
Carlos Guarin, eighth in the region. Guarin is 4-5 in singles
play, 4-1 in the conference. The Bears’ number one
doubles team of Ataide Suca and Gabriel Nicotra second in the
region. They have an 8-2 record on the season, 6-0 in the
CIAA.
In the coming weeks, Shaw will take on Winston-Salem State on
Sunday, April 3, and face off against Charleston on Friday, April 8
in the CIAA/WVIAC Challenge. As part of that same event, Shaw
will take on Bluefield – ranked third in both the NCAA and
ITA rankings – the same day.
The Shaw women’s tennis team is ranked tenth in the region,
directly behind Winston-Salem State. California (PA) is atop
the Atlantic Region.
Both teams travel to Winston-Salem State this weekend for the CIAA
Divisional Roundup.
