Shaw Men's Tennis Swept Out of NCAA Tournament By Abilene Christian

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. –  The Shaw University men's tennis team saw their hopes of a deep NCAA Tournament run ended with a 5-0 sweep by Abilene Christian at the NCAA Championship Tournament held at Sanlando Park. 

ACU, the sixth ranked team in the nation, opened play by sweeping all three doubles matches.  Only the Shaw doubles pairing of Kalada Kienka and Daniel Vasquez managed to win any games off their Wildcat opponents, falling 8-4. 

The Bears could not find their footing in singles, either.  Shaw number one single player Carlos Guarin quickly fell 6-1, 6-0 to Hans Hoch, ranked 15th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.    Vasquez won three games off his opponent, Bryan Joiner, but still fell 6-1, 6-2 to give the Wildcats five wins in the best-of-nine format. 

With the loss, the Bears finish the season with a 25-2 record.  Shaw had earned their place in the tournament by winning the NCAA Atlantic Region Pod 1 with a 5-3 win over Bluefield State last week.  This was Shaw's first trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament, which includes the 16 regional pod winners.

Abilene Christian improves to 20-9 and will face Barry at 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning in the national quarterfinals.
