Shaw Men's Tennis Advances to NCAA Regional Finals

RALEIGH, N.C.  - The Shaw University men's tennis team advanced to the Division II NCAA Regional Finals with a 5-0 win over West Liberty Sunday afternoon in a match played at Biltmore Hills Park.

The second seeded Bears improve to 26-2 on the season while the seventh seeded Hilltoppers finish their season with a 9-6 record.

The best-of-nine match opened with doubles.  At number one doubles, Charles Silva and Juan Sanchez downed Jeshua Irazabal and Ayman Barakat 8-3 while the number two doubles team of Gabriel Nicotra and Daniel Vasquez defeated Erik Jahreskog and Jesus Gimenez by an identical 8-3 mark.

The number three team of Artur Latypov and Andre Monti finished the sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-0 win over Tyler McCullough and Logan Jarrett.

With Shaw needing only two singles wins to clinch the match, the Bears got an early victory when West Liberty's number five singles player, Giminez, retired with an injury trailing Sanchez 4-0.  Monti brought in the final win with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Logan Jarrett.

The Bears now face number three seed Bloomsburg at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Biltmore Hills Park with a spot in the National Tournament at stake.  The National Tournament, composed of the winners of the 16 pods scattered around the country, will be held May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky.
