North Carolina Central Defeats Bowie State 7-4 To Earn 2006 CIAA Softball Title

PETERSBURG, VA - The North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles earned a 7-4 victory over Bowie State in the 2006 CIAA Women’s Softball Championship title-game as the Lady Eagles completed the championship undefeated en route the conference crown on Sunday from the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA

The Lady Eagles, led by CIAA Rookie of the Year Sophia Blue, needed to defeat the Lady Bulldogs only once in the double-elimination format tournament championship-game to claim the 2006 CIAA softball title as Bowie State advanced to the title game from the consolation bracket after defeating the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University 3-0 earlier in the day.

The Championship game would be scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the NCCU offense tallied a single run that would give them a slim 1-0 lead and jump-start their offense.

The Lady Eagles poured on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to the win.

Clarisse Steans earned the win for the Lady Eagles as she pitched a complete-game seven hitter, striking out two batters en route to All-Tournament Team honors.
