march 10, 2007

RALEIGH - Saint Augustine's College got strong pitching from sophomore Alyce Wesley (Detroit, MI) and timely hitting from several players to beat Johnson C. Smith 3-2 in the first game and 7-0 in the second game of a CIAA softball doubleheader, which was played at Oakwood Park on Saturday, March 10, 2007. The Lady Falcons started the 2007 season at 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA while the Lady Golden Bulls fell to 0-4 and 0-2 in the CIAA.

Wesley fired a five-hitter including nine strikeouts and two walks in the first game. But the contest wasn't decided until sophomore Raquel Spencer (Jacksonville, NC) drilled a RBI single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning, which scored senior Kyuanna Foxx (Salisbury, NC) for the game-winning run.

Spencer's RBI hit capped a late rally for the Lady Falcons, who trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lady Golden Bulls scored in the top of the sixth inning after Torri File scored on an error and Coco Villarreal smacked an RBI single.

The Lady Falcons tied the score in the sixth inning, however, on an RBI double by sophomore Antoinette Bailey (Detroit, MI), which scored Spencer and an error on the next at-bat, which scored Bailey. The Lady Golden Bulls committed seven errors in the first game.

The second game was scoreless until the Lady Falcons erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The highlights of the inning were a three-run triple by senior Tereah Albury (Nassau, Bahamas), which scored Spencer, freshman Britney Simmons (Detroit, MI) and Bailey, and a two-run inside-the-park home run on the next at-bat by freshman Janay White (Pittsboro, NC), which scored her and Albury. Senior Chrishauna Thomas (Suitland, MD) followed with an RBI double, which scored Foxx and sophomore Diamond Andrews (Detroit, MI) hit an RBI single, which scored Thomas in the seventh inning.

The Lady Falcons belted 13 hits to give Wesley more than enough support, and Wesley responded with a four-hit shutout.

The Lady Falcons will host Virginia State in a CIAA doubleheader at Walnut Creek Complex on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, starting at 1 p.m. The home twinbill is the second of three straight for the Lady Falcons.
