Darrell Toney takes over reigns of Bowie State Softball
February 4, 2009
(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University Athletic Director Derek Carter
has announced the appointment of Darrell Toney as the new head
coach of the two-time defending CIAA Champion softball team.
Toney is no stranger to the Lady Bulldogs having served as a
volunteer coach during the 2006 season. What makes him even more
familiar with the team is the fact that his daughter (Tiffany) has
been a three-year starter.
Following his volunteer work with BSU, Toney was the head coach at
Montgomery Junior College. After leading the Lady Knights to their
first ever Regional Runner-up finish, he returned to Bowie State as
an assistant.
Coach Toney is well known in the State of Maryland as a teacher of
the game, hosting many pitching clinics and batting clinics. He
brings over 15 years of experience to Bowie State having coached
and served as a consultant in Texas prior to coming to the Maryland
area.
Following his appointment, Toney said, “My job is to simply
keep demanding the dedication and passion from each player
regardless of their status or classification. Bowie State softball
has had great success the last two years. However, regardless of
the success there is always room for improvement and my job is to
identify those areas. I’ve been with all the seniors
throughout their time at Bowie State and have a good grasp on what
each player’s capabilities are … so now it’s
time to go to work!”
Bowie State opens the season – Saturday, March 14th versus
Slippery Rock University.
