INDIANA, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (29-13)
gave it their all, but the team came up short in a 3-0 loss to
California (Pa.), Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rams finished
the season with a great defensive effort, holding the Vulcans to
just three runs, but couldn’t get any runs across the plate
to end the season with the hard-fought loss. Although the
game began yesterday morning, play was suspended until Sunday due
to inclement weather.
Strong defense was the order of the game in the game as the Lady
Rams and the Vulcans combined for just eight hits and no errors in
the game. As a team, the Lady Rams managed just three hits with
sophomore designated hitter Tiffany Burgess going two-for-two at
the plate with a pair of singles and freshman outfielder Tanaya
Pettus adding a hit and a walk as well.
With such a great defensive effort by the two teams, runs were hard
to come by in the game as the Lady Rams kept the game within reach
1-0 heading into the seventh inning. A fourth-inning RBI single
scored the only run of the game through the first six innings.
However, the Vulcans added a pair of runs on a seventh-inning
two-run home run that left the Lady Rams with the 3-0 loss.
Sophomore Brittany Lane (16-7) took the pitching loss in spite of a
great performance. She pitched all seven innings, allowing just
five hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.
The loss capped a phenomenal season by the Lady Rams who took home
the 2011 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)
championship.
