NCAA Atlantic Regional: Hawks Battle but Fall to #1 Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, PA - The Chowan
University softball team battled with #1 Bloomsburg University
this morning but fell 5-2 in the opening game of the NCAA DII
Atlantic Regionals. The Hawks trailed 2-0 through four innings but
picked up a clutch pinch hit single from Megan Wade in the top
of the 5th inning to score two runs and knot the game at 2-2.
Bloomsburg battled back to score three runs in their ensuing at-bat
and held on to the eventual 5-2 win. The Hawks will now play
tomorrow at 1:30pm. They await the loser of the West Virginia
Wesleyan (WVIAC Champions) and at-large bid Indiana
University-Pennsylvania.
Bloomsburg took an early lead after scoring runs in the first and
third innings. The Hawks loaded the bases in the fifth
inning after Tricia Gorman reached base on a
fielding error. Brooke Owen moved Gorman and reached
first on a bunt single and Melissa Woodrum singled up
the middle. Wade came in to pinch hit and with two strikes came
through with a single just past a diving Bloomsburg shortstop.
Gorman scored easily and Owen slid by a tag attempt by Bloomsburg
at home to knot the game at 2-2.
Bloomsburg answered with three runs in their next at-bat and held
the Hawks from scoring to take the 5-2 win. Bloomsburg tallied 11
hits while Chowan had five hits in the game.
Gorman was 2-3 with a run scored while Wade was 1-1 with a two
run single. Fahren Munro and Woodrum were both
1-3.
Christie Wright picked up the loss on the mound after
throwing four innings. She scatttered nine hits and three earned
runs while striking out one batter. Jessica Farmer came
in to throw the last two innings. She gave up two hits and struck
out one through six batters faced.
Chowan moves to the loser's bracket where they will await the loser
of the #4 West Virginia Wesleyan/#5 Indiana University-PA game
being played at 1:30pm today.
