Kindred Wins High Jump at 2009 Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Joe Kindred (Sr./Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) of Saint Augustine's College tied a personal best of 7-5 to win the College Men's High Jump Championship Division on Saturday (April 25) at the 2009 Penn Relays held at Franklin Field.
 
Kindred, the 2009 national indoor field athlete of the year and the 2008 national outdoor field athlete of the year in Division II, beat a strong field including Dwight Barbiasz of the University of Maryland, who finished second with a jump of 7-2.25.

"Everyone was good," said Kindred, who won the same event at the Penn Relays in 2008. "We are always battling so it could've been anyone's win. I'm happy I won."
 
The winning jump tied Kindred's best of 7-5 which he first set at the Penn State Invitational indoor meet on Jan. 26, 2008.
 
The victory capped a good week at the Penn Relays for Kindred, who also finished seventh in the College Men's Long Jump Championship Division with a jump of 24-9.75. Jeremy Hicks of LSU was the winner with a leap of 26-3.
 
The Saint Augustine's College team of Rashaud Johnson (Sr./St. Louis, Mo.), Antonio Abney (Soph./Willingboro, N.J.), Randy Curry (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) and Josh Scott (Soph./Winter Haven, Fla.) placed second in the College Men's 4x400 Championship of America relay in a personal best of 3:02.10. Florida State won the relay in 3:01.54.
 
In other results involving Saint Augustine's College student-athletes, Brandon Quarles (Jr./Phoenix, Ariz.) placed fourth in the College Men's Triple Jump College Division with a jump of 49-7.25, Christopher Copeland (Fr./Suffolk, Va.) placed fourth in the College Men's High Jump College Division with a leap of 6-6.75, and the foursome of Ramon Gittens (Soph./St. Michael, Barbados), Richard Boone (Jr./Petersburg, Va.), Dennis Boone (Sr./Petersburg, Va.) and Josh Robinson (Jr./Kansas City, Kan.) finished fourth in the College Men's 4x200 Championship of America Division in 1:22.35.
 
Olympic sprinter Barbara Pierre (Jr./Winter Haven, Fla.) placed sixth in the College Women's 100 Dash Championship Division in 11.47 on Saturday, and she led a team including Dartania Jackson (Jr./Tampa, Fla.), Sheena Johns (Soph./Greenwood, Del.), and Angelique Smith (Fr./Union City, Calif.) to a sixth-place finish in the College Women's 4x100 College Division in 46.00 on Friday.
 
The foursome of Pierre, Smith, Krya Mobley (Jr./Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Sharona Brown (Jr./Manchester, Jamaica) placed ninth out of 35 teams in the College Women's Sprint Medley Championship of America Division. Their time was 3:58.06.
 
Former Saint Augustine's College sprinter Phillippe DeRosier won the Olympic Development Men's 100 Dash in 10.23.
 
The Penn Relays were held April 21-25, 2009.
