ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Saint Augustine’s College placed
second in the men’s standings and sixth in the women’s
standings Saturday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field
Championships.
Host Adams State won the men’s title with 89 points, breaking
the Falcons’ four-year reign. The Falcons scored 72 points
followed by Abilene Christian with 52 points.
Lincoln (Mo.) won the women’s crown with 56 points. Ashland
and Grand Valley State tied for second with 47 points and Adams
State was fourth with 38 points. Nebraska-Omaha had 35 points
followed by the Lady Falcons with 27 points.
Josh Scott (Jr./Winter Haven, Fla.) led the Falcon men with
victories in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. The defending
national champion in both events, Scott set championship meet
records in the 200 (20.91) and the 400 (46.05). His win in the 200
gave the Falcons a 62-57 lead over Adams State.
But Adams State placed six of the top eight runners in the 5,000
run to surge ahead 89-62 with one event left. Scott teamed up with
Antonio Abney, Jason Boyd and Richard Boone to take the 4x400-meter
relay in the final event.
Chris Copeland, who won the high jump Friday, was the only other
Falcon winner. Orolando Duffus was third in the triple jump, Abney
was third in the 400 and Boyd was third in the 60 hurdles.
In the women’s event, Barbara Pierre (Sr./Winter Haven, Fla.)
finished second in the 60 meters and third in the 200 meters to
lead the Lady Falcons. Pierre also was part of a foursome including
Angelique Smith, Sheena Johns, and Kyra Mobley that placed second
in the 1600-meter relay.
This is the first time since 2004 that neither the men’s nor
women’s teams of Saint Augustine’s College took home
the national title.
