Williams Named Division II Men’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year

Acclaimed head coach George Williams of Saint Augustine’s College was selected national men’s head coach of the year in Division II outdoor track and field Thursday by the nation’s coaches. The announcement was made by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
“It is nice to win the award,” said Williams, who
was the 2004 U.S. Men’s Olympic Track and Field Coach.
“I wish I could give a piece of it to each student-athlete on
the team. I also want to thank my coaching colleagues who voted for
me.”
Williams guided the Falcons to the national men’s crown with a 20-point margin victory at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in May. It is the 10th outdoor title for the men and 31st overall for the Falcons’ program under Williams, who also led the Falcons and Lady Falcons to the CIAA men’s and women’s outdoor championships.
This is the seventh coaching award in 2009-10 for Williams, who was named CIAA coach of the year in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s indoor track and field and women’s cross country. His four CIAA awards were the most of any league coach this season. Williams also garnered Atlantic Region head coaching honors in men’s indoor and outdoor track and field.
Williams, the athletic director at Saint Augustine’s College, also produced the 2010 CIAA male student-athlete of the year in jumper Orolando Duffus. Williams has coached track and field and cross country at Saint Augustine’s College since 1976, and his scholarship student-athletes have a 95 percent graduation rate.
