Five VSU Lady Trojans qualify for Indoor Nationals

Five Virginia State University’s women’s indoor track athletes, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Nationals at the University of Maryland Invitational held at the Sports and Learning Complex on Saturday, Jan 22. Junior Samantha Edwards (Elmont, NY) and sophomore Shaundra Cook (Franklin County, VA) qualified individually and the women’s team of Faith Brock (Virginia Beach, VA), Samantha Edwards (Elmont, NY), Dominique King (Kansas City, MO), and Jovonne Tyson-King (Pontiac, MI) all qualified in the women’s 4X400 meter relay.
Samantha Edwards (Elmont, NY) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Nationals by placing fifth in a Women’s 200 meters dash. Edwards placed fifth with a time of 24.58 #.
Shaundra Cook (Franklin County, VA) competed in the women’s triple jump event placing fifth with a leap of 11.51 meters (37’ 9 ¼”).
The Lady Trojan’s team of Dominique King ,Faith Brock, Jovonne Tyson-King , and Samantha Edwards also qualified for Nationals in the women’s 4X400 meter relay with a team finish of fourth place (3:53.54 #).
The men’s indoor track team at VSU, finished in third place in the men’s 4X400 meter relay. Aaron Chatmon (Waldorf, MD), Jonathan McMillon (Alexandria, VA), Daniel Ross (Baltimore, MD), and Eric Thomas (Hampton, VA) crossed the finish line in 3:21.37 # seconds.
Sophomore Aaron Chatmon (Waldorf, MD)competed in the men’s 200 meter dash finishing in second place with a time of 22.67 #.
Head Coach Jason-Lamont Jackson added “Both our Men’s and Women’s teams are off to a good solid start as we approach the championship season. I am very pleased with the student-athletes attitude, commitment and enthusiasm moving toward the CIAA Championships in three weeks.”
The men’s and women’s indoor track team continues their 2011 season on Saturday, Jan. 29th at the Christopher Newport Invite in Newport News, VA.
