JCSU WOMEN TAKE 4TH; MEN TIE FOR 6TH AT THE 2011 NCAA DII TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
JCSU wins three event championships

Turlock, CA – Johnson C. Smith University finished fourth overall in the women’s events and tied for sixth in the men’s events after the final day of the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by California State Stanislaus on Al Brenda Track inside Warrior Stadium. JCSU women recorded 36 team points, while the men had 37 points along with Western State University.
Grand Valley State won the women’s title with 82.5 points, followed by Lincoln (MO) in second with 68, and then Adams State rounds out the top three with 51 points. Fellow CIAA institutions St. Augustine’s College (17) and Virginia State (8) placed 15th and T-29th, respectively.
Abilene Christian reclaimed the men’s title from the defending champion St. Augustine’s Falcons with 68 points. Adams State tallied 55 points for second, followed by Lincoln (MO) in third with 51, Emporia State had 43 points for fourth, and St. Augustine’s took fifth with 41 points. Either Saint Augustine's College or Abilene Christian has taken the men's championship since 1982.
Senior Shermaine Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) won the national crown in the women’s 100m hurdles. Her time of 12.95 edged Indira Spence of Adams State for the win and tied a meet record (set by Williams in 2009). Freshman Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica), junior Rosemarie Carty (St. Andrew, Jamaica), and senior Lakaevia Tyler (Miami, FL) also competed in the event. D. Williams finished third (13.13) and Carty in fifth (13.49); while Tyler did not finish.
Danielle Williams ran an 11.50 to place second in the women’s 100m; missing the crown by 0.08 seconds to Judith Riley of Lincoln (MO).
The women’s foursome of sophomore Naffene Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica), D. Williams, Tyler, and S. Williams just missed capturing the 4x100m relay title, placing second with a time of 44.79 behind Lincoln Missouri (44.57).
Senior Leford Green (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and sophomore Akino Ming (Portland, Jamaica) were the top two finishers in the men’s 400m. Green won the title with a time of 45.74, followed by Ming in 46.74.
Green returned to compete in the men’s 400m hurdles to take sixth in 53.29. Junior Andre Collins (Kingston, Jamaica) took seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 14.36.
The men’s tandem of sophomore Winston Brown (St. Andrew, Jamaica), freshman Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL), Green, and Ming ran a 40.80 in the 4x100m relay to finish fifth. However, the foursome of Ming, Brown, Green, and sophomore Jamille Callum (Orleans, MA) won the men’s 4x400 meter relay. JCSU edged out St. Augustine’s for the event title with a time of 3:07.59.
Johnson C. Smith brings back to Charlotte three event crowns (Women’s 100m H, Men’s 400m, and Men’s 4x400 relay)and 10 All-Americans (five men and five women).
