2011 DII SCHOLAR TEAM OF THE YEAR
39 squads were named All-Academic teams for the 2011 track &
field seasons

New Orleans, LA – The Johnson C. Smith University men’s
track & field team was announced as Outdoor Scholar Team of the
Year in Division II for the 2011 seasons by the U.S. Track &
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). JCSU earned
the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing team with
at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA outdoor
championship. Chadron State won the award for the indoor season. In
addition, the USTFCCCA announced 39 teams as All-Academic teams for
the track & field seasons.
The Golden Bulls placed sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in
May and garnered a cumulative team GPA of 3.13.
Just last week, Leford Green (St. Catherine, Jamaica), the NCAA
400-meter champ, was named the Scholar Track Athlete of the Year
for the outdoor season. Green, Winston Brown (St. Andrew, Jamaica),
Andre Collins (Kingston, Jamaica), and Akino Ming (Portland,
Jamaica) were named to the All-Academic team last week as well.
Ming, a rising junior, was the national runner-up to Green in the
400 meters and was won the 4x400-meter relay team with Green and
Brown that won a national title.
Chadron State tied for ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in
March and holds a cumulative team GPA of 3.12.
Johnson C. Smith University was the only CIAA intuition to gain
All-Academic team status. JCSU is the first and only CIAA squad to
be named Scholar Team of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also
announced the men’s 2011 Division II All-Academic Track &
Field Teams. A total of 39 institutions earned the distinction as a
result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.
Truman State holds the best cumulative team GPA in the land among
DII men’s track & field programs with a 3.48 tally.
Bentley and Southwest Baptist follow in the category with a 3.39
and 3.30, respectively.
The GLVC notched seven of its members to the All-Academic list
while the RMAC, PSAC, and GNAC each had five squads represented
among the nation’s best.
