Elon, NC- The Virginia State University men' and women's outdoor track and field teams, under the leadership of head coach Wilbert Johnson, continue to make improvements on their performances as they prepare for the 2018 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship as well as the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon University on April 14, gave the Trojans a chance to make their presences know in their respective events.

MEN'S TOP 5
The VSU men's outdoor track and field team is familiar with the first place awards platform. Allen Blair secured a first place finish in the 200m event with a time of 21.51. Rounding the track with a first place 4x100 time of 41.61 were Stephen Anderson, Allen Blair, Steven Murdock and Keith Barbour, while the 4x400 quartet of Steven Murdock, Allen Blair, Milton Coleman-Sledge and Tyron Evans collected a 3:15.42 first place time. Dajawn Williams rounded out the first place finishes with a high jump range of 6'7".
Collecting second place finishes in their respective events for the Trojans are Allen Blair, Steven Murdock and Emmanuel Oguntoye. Blair claimed the 100m second place finish with a time of 10.96, while Murdock took secured dual second place finishes in the 200m (21.83) and the 400m (49.08).
Leaping in a third place high jump range of 6'1.25 was Milton Coleman-Sledge while Allen Blair claimed the third place long jump finish of 22'10.5". Stephen Anderson was not too far behind with a fourth place long jump range of 22'9.25". Also securing a fourth place finish were Milton Coleman-Sledge in the 400m (50.12) and Brandon Slade in the discus throw (145'3").
Rounding out the men's top five finishes at the Phoenix Invitational where Justin Walls in the 110 Hurdles (15.80), Keith Barbour in the men's long jump (22'2.5"), and Dajawn Williams in the men's triple jump (47'3").
WOMEN's TOP 5
On the women's side of the Phoenix Invitational, the Trojans were led by Jeia Gilliam with her consistent performance in the discus throw, ranging a first place measurement of 176'8". Tying for first place in the women's triple jump was Jade Jordan with a leap of 38'0".
Representing the Trojans with a third place finish in their respective events were Zainab Bangura in the 100m (12.80), Alexandria Moseley in the 400m (58.37), Jade Jordan in the women's high jump (5'3.25") and Jeia Gilliam in the shot put event (45'5.25").
Rounding out the women's top five finishes and crossing the finish line with a 400m fifth place time of 58.99 was Deriel Green.
Under the leadership of head coach Wilbert Johnson, the Trojans have a gauge on how they can improve and prepare for the upcoming 2018 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 5-6 in Bowie, MD.
On April 21, Virginia State will host the VSU Trojan Invite on the campus of VSU. It will be the first time since 2014 that the Trojan will host a Track and Field Event.
