DONNA POLK CHOSEN AS BOWIE STATE’S HEAD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

(BOWIE, MD) Bowie State University Athletic Director Derek Carter
has officially announced the hiring of Donna Polk as the new Head
Coach of the Lady Bulldogs. “Ms. Polk has been a tremendous
asset in many facets of our department”, says Carter.
“This opportunity will allow her to further demonstrate her
knowledge and skills as a women’s basketball coach.”
She is no stranger to Bowie State having served the past three
years as the Associate Athletic Director for
Operations/Compliance.
“I am honored to serve as the new women’s basketball
coach at Bowie State University. I want to first thank Dr. Mickey
L. Burnim and Mr. Derek Carter for the opportunity to lead the Lady
Bulldogs of Bowie State University,” said Polk.
Polk previously served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach of
Columbia Union College (Takoma Park, MD) for two seasons
(2003-2005) and also served as the institutions Sports Information
Director and Director of Compliance from 2002-2005. Some of her
other coaching positions include Assistant Women’s Coach
– Columbia Union College (2001-2003), Head Girl’s
Basketball Coach at Bowie High School (1999-2001) and Head Junior
Varsity Basketball Coach (1998-1999), also at Bowie High
School.
Polk also said, “I am excited to get back on the sidelines
and look forward to guiding our young ladies to be successful on
and off the court. We have a good group of players returning and
several new additions to the team. We are going to work hard, be
dedicated and committed to excellence. I want to continue the
recent success of the program and want everyone to embrace our
basketball team in a way like no other.”
Polk is a member of the Columbia Union Lady Pioneers basketball
team (1987-1991) and is a member of the 1,000 point club. The
Harbeson, Delaware native also played softball for Columbia Union
and graduated in May 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Counseling Psychology. Polk has also earned a Master of Arts degree
in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in
2006.
