VUU Athletics Signs Hall-of-Famer

Barvenia Wooten-Collier has returned to her alma mater as the new Woman’s Basketball Head Coach.
Wooten-Collier is no stranger to Virginia Union University
Panthers Athletics. While attending VUU, she led the Lady
Panthers in scoring and rebounding during her junior and senior
years. She was a part of two CIAA Championship teams (1981 &
1982) and led them to a NCAA Division II National Championship in
1983. In the national championship game, the three-time All-CIAA
performer would score 25 points and have 15 rebounds, earning her
ESPN’s MVP Award. She also was selected to be a part of the
1983 NCAA Division II Regional and National Championship All-
Tournament teams. She would end her collegiate career with a total
of 1,534 points and 724 rebounds and All-American status.
In 1997, Wooten-Collier continued her basketball career in the
ABL (American Basketball League) with the Philadelphia Rage. She
was later picked up by the Maryland Sparks in the Washington
Basketball League (WBL) in Largo, Maryland. Wooten Collier averaged
11 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists. She would rank #1 in
rebounding.
Wooten-Collier comes to VUU from Prince George’s Community
College. She became head coach in 2000 after two years as assistant
coach. There, her teams won the 2006 MD JUCO conference, NJCAA
Division II Region XX Women’s Basketball Championship, and
finishing 6th in the country at the 2006 NJCAA Women’s
Basketball Division II Championship in Phoenix, Arizona. She was
named the Maryland JUCO Coach of the year in 2001. In 2006, she
regained her title as well as the Region XX Coach of the Year and
again in 2010.
Last season (2010), she led her 12-1 team to a 2nd place victory at the NJCAA Region XX Conference Championship. Her team would advance to complete in the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament and finished 11th in the Nation.
