VANESSA TAYLOR CHOSEN TO ATTEND THE 2010 NCAA WOMEN COACHES ACADEMY
Skill enhancement academy
November 9, 2010
Charlotte, NC – Johnson C. Smith University head
women’s basketball coach Vanessa Taylor has been selected to
participate in the 2010 NCAA Women Coaches Academy being held
December 13th – December 17th in Denver, Colorado.
The NCAA Women Coaches Academy provides skills training for coaches
at all levels to assist them in being more efficient, productive,
resourceful and successful. The academy is designed for women
coaches who are ready and willing to increase their individual
effectiveness by learning advanced skills and strategies that
directly affect their personal and team success. The participants
learn skills that are not sport specific, yet ones that are
relevant and necessary for coaching responsibilities, beyond the
X’s and O’s.
“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to attend this
academy; I’m sure they’ll provide some useful tips and
information for improving as a coach,” said Taylor.
“Though I have a good deal of experience as a coach,
you’re never too far along to learn and become better at your
craft.”
Vanessa Taylor is entering her 10th season as head coach of the
JCSU women's basketball program. Prior to her joining the Golden
Bulls staff, Taylor compiled an 83-95 record over seven years at
Elizabeth City State University.
In nine seasons as head coach of the Lady Golden Bulls, Taylor
has guided her team to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Championship game on four separate occasions.
JCSU finished as runners-up in 2003, 2006 and 2008; then captured
the first ever women's CIAA Tournament Championship at Johnson C.
Smith in 2009. Thus far, her career record at JCSU is an impressive
167-100 and 250-195 overall.
The WCA is designed to give coaches the opportunity to understand
their expanding role as a coach, along with perspectives and skills
to help them make the most of their situation. In the company and
understanding of other coaches, they will have the opportunity to
talk and listen with others to gain support and learn new tools and
strategies.
The first component is the Core Curriculum offered in a five day
format. The WCA program is structured into four educational tracks.
1. Philosophy and Fundamentals. 2. Management Skills. 3.
Communication Strategies. 4. Career Development.
There is no doubt that the Women Coaches Academy has made an impact
on the coaches who have attended, and in turn, they will impact the
lives of their student athletes.
It’s simple – as a coach grows and develops better
skills and perspectives -- student athletes and schools
benefit.
