Shaw's Buford wins national honor

NC A&T’s Coleman, UMES’s Morton, UDC’s Ellison and SU’s Buford win National Player of the Week Honors

Hartly, DE – NC A&T’s Thomas Coleman, Maryland Eastern Shore’s Casey Morton, University of DC’s Tim Ellison and Shaw University’s Kyria Buford are the winners of the basketball fan poll.  They were nominated for their performances in games played from January 17th thru January 22nd, 2011.  Each week during the season, HSRN’s staff will select the top performances from all HBCU action and give the fans across the country a chance to vote for the Player of the Week.

HSRN developed the fan poll to get all HBCU alumni, students and fans involved with the national process and to also give everyone a chance to consistently keep up with the individual performances around the country.  This web site and our broadcasts are designed to keep you abreast of all action around HBCU athletic competition. 

Div. I  Men
Thomas Coleman – N.C. A&T – C/F - 6’9, 220 – SR/Louisville, KY
Coleman led the Aggies to a 1-1 week with two double-doubles.  In their setback against Hampton, he was a bright spot finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds, one assist and one steal and in their win over S.C. State, he finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocks, one assist and one steal.

Div. I Women
Casey Morton – MD Eastern Shore G – 5’9 – SR/Mardela Springs, MD
Morton helped the Lady Hawks to a 2-1 week with a 21.6 point per game average.  In their win over Bethune Cookman, she finished with 24 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.  They had a setback against Savannah St., but Morton finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal and in their win over Coppin St., she had 26 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Div. II Men
Tim Ellison – Univ. of D.C. – G – 6’5, 185 – SR/Alexander, VA
Ellison led the Firebirds to their third straight win in the only outing last week.  UDC defeated Bloomfield College 109-106 behind his 26 points, seven rebounds, one assists and one block.  Ellison was 3 of 6 (50%) from three point range, 9 of 15 (60%) from the floor and 5 of 6 (83%) from the charity stripe.

Div. II Women
Kyria Buford – Shaw – F – 6’ – JR/Charlotte, NC
Buford helped the Lady Bears to a 1-1 week with one double-double performance.  In their setback against Elizabeth City St., she had 12 points, 16 rebounds, three blocks and one steal and in the win over arch-rival St. Augustine’s, she finished with 22 points, five rebounds, four blocks and one steal.
