FSU Rallies for a 70-46 Blowout Win Over VUU

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women's basketball team held Virginia Union University to just 16 points in the second half for a 70-46 victory on Saturday, January 10th inside Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU improves to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while the Lady Panthers fall to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.

Fayetteville State struggled to find a good playing rhythm in the first half. Midway through the first period, Virginia Union held a 22-10 advantage. A layup from Ashley Freeman at the 8:29 mark extended the VUU lead to 28-11. FSU responded with an 11-0 scoring run to trim their deficit down to 28-22 with two minutes before the half. The Lady Panthers went almost seven minutes without scoring a bucket of any sort.

Two free throws from sophomore forward Makayla Williams (Raleigh, NC) before the close of the initial period made the halftime score 30-26 in favor of Virginia Union. Junior guard Doreen Richardson (Salisbury, NC) paced the Lady Broncos with eight points and two steals in the first half.

FSU quickly erased their deficit in the second half. By the 7:32 mark, Virginia Union had been outscored 20-4. Back to back scores from Williams, including a three-pointer for a 59-42 lead with 3:32 to play. Fayetteville State concluded the final three and half minutes outscoring VUU 11-4.

Junior forward Jordan Hill (New Bern, NC) debuted for the Lady Broncos with a game-high 19 points, along with eight rebounds. Senior center Deja Middleton (Richmond, VA) produced her fifth consecutive double-double and 11th of the season with 15 rebounds and 14 points. Middleton eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career and rapidly approaching 1,000 rebounds with 961 after this contest.

Williams and Richardson finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively and each had five assists. Junior center Bria Robinson (Belmont, NC) added a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards.

Ashle Freeman and Lady Walker both scored 14 points for the Lady Panthers. Walker also led VUU in rebounding with 10 boards.

Fayetteville State looks to string together a win streak with their next matchup against Bowie State University on Monday, January 12th. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Capel Arena.
