Spartans Power past Hawks, 63-41

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 63-41 decision to the University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks slide to 3-2 on the season while the Spartans improve to 3-3 after the victory.   

Courtni Williams led the effort for the Hawks with nine points in the contest.  Dhyamond Crenshaw followed with eight points while Jada Lee chipped in five points.  Alisha Mobley grabbed six rebounds (six defensive) while Danielle Weldon added five rebounds (four offensive, one defensive). 

The Spartans had four players score double-digit points led by Elena De Alfredo with 11 points.  Juliana Cavallaro, Jenny Horvatinovic and Taylor McVey notched 10 points apiece.  Angela Alvraez hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds (three offensive, nine defensive) while Karma Jeremie added 10 rebounds (two offensive, eight defensive). 

The University of Tampa jumped to a quick 5-0 lead at the start of the first quarter.  The Hawks remained within striking distance but still trailed 12-9 heading into the first quarter.  Trailing 14-9 with 8:37 on the clock in the second quarter, a layup my Mercedes Tapia, three-pointer by Williams and layup by Crenshaw gave Chowan their first lead of the game (16-14). 

Cavallaro hit a three-pointer on the Spartans' next possession, sparking an 8-0 run.  Crenshaw hit a layup at the close of the second quarter, but the Hawks still faced an 24-18 deficit heading into halftime. 

The University of Tampa came out firing at the start of the third quarter and used to 16-2 run to jump to a 40-20 advantage.  The Hawks were unable to recover from the deficit and trailed by double-digit points for the remainder of the contest.

The Hawks look to recover on Sunday when they take on Saint Anslem at 1:00pm.
